WHALES & SHIPS ORCA WHALES
1 hour
Grades Pre-K

Discover the big players in the ocean world. Take a museum walk-through with our educator and touch
whale bones, see our whaleboat up close, and our other artifacts. Whale film included. 1 hour. $4.25

Arts Add-On:
• Students learn about whale anatomy and create paper beluga, orca, or humpback whale puppets or and create sparkly whale posters of whale species. 30 min. $2.50

Learn all about the amazing and beautiful orca whale. Find out how big they are, how they eat, what they
look like up close, and why they have blow holes in this brand new program! Film included.

Arts Add-On:
• Students learn about general orca whale anatomy, where their flippers are placed, and create their own paper orca whale puppets. 30 min. $2.50

SINK OR FLOAT WONDER OF WHALES

Grades Pre-K - 3

How do boats float? Find out! See our whaleboat and practice floating and sinking with different shapes,
weights, and clay. Older students discuss density. Accommodates up to 40 students.

Arts Add-On:
• Students learn about a ship’s main parts and form their own boat model craft. $2.50

What was life like for Long Island communities in the 1800s? Travel through time and find out. Students
discover the role of whaling in people’s lives, understand typical jobs, and touch artifacts to explore the maritime heritage in people’s lifestyles. Film: Had You Lived Then.

WHALERS AND WHALING MOBY DICK AT THE MUSEUM

Explore the lives of 19th century whalers and the importance of whaling in US history. Students learn the how, why, and when of whale hunting and the need for whale conservation.

Enrich your students’ study of the classic novel by seeing the tools of the whaling industry, understanding the crew’s life and roles aboard a whaling ship, and discovering life during Melville’s time.

• Explore the traditional art and craft of ship-in-a-bottle. Students bring their own clean, glass, label-free jars; we supply everything

loved one during the 1800s. 45 min $3.75

What was a sailor’s like life aboard a whaling ship? Find out by touching artifacts, examining sailors’ tools, singing a sea chantey, and exploring nautical culture.

Bring history to life and learn the stories and personalities behind the 19th century homes of Cold Spring Harbor in this fun walking tour. What will you learn?

Our programs travel to schools. Expand your cur riculum with historic photographs, objects to touch and explore, crafts,and hands-on-activities. This program is eligible for schools who have not visited us in the past two years.

Cost: $250 for 1 hr class, max 30 students;         
$200 for second class. Mileage fees may apply.

JAZZ UP YOUR HISTORY CLASSES
Infuse your history class with fresh, object-based approaches. Emphasis is placed on close observation of objects, communication, science and art links, and personal connections to provide a better understanding of history.
INQUIRY-BASED SCIENCE CRASH COURSE
Turn your students into scientists by enhancing your teaching with inquiry-based methods for meaningful science learning. We will translate theory to action for you and model hands-on experiments based on your curriculum

MUSEUM VISITATION POLICY PARKING
Discipline and deportment of children are the responsibility of the accompanying adults. All buses and tour groups are required to park immediately in front of the museum or the Wright House on the same side of the street.
THE MUSEUM STORE ADULT TOURS
The store offers nautical items ranging from $.25 upward. There are many items under $5.00. Profits from the gift shop help offset the rising costs of educational programming.  

The Museum has a collection of films which is incorporated into the regular Educational Programs. These films are of great help in understanding whaling in its historic context, life in a whaling community, and the present need to protect our marine mammal populations.
