Outreach Program

The Whaling Museum offers fun, hands-on programs for schools, libraries, community organizations,
camps, and afterschool.

Our hands-on programs present a unique fusion of art, science, and history for children grades K-6. Touch a whale tooth, float a boat, create blubber, uncover shark teeth, color oil artwork – let us bring our museum to you!

Please click here to download a PDF of
our outreach brochure.

To learn more about our programs, please contact Nomi, Program Director, at (631) 367-3418 x 17, or ndayan@cshwhalingmuseum.org.

If your class or school has not visited our museum in the past 2 years, The Whaling Museum Society is
sponsoring free outreach programs at your school, in conjunction with a booked museum program. This
program arrangement is limited to local neighboring schools; 2 classes minimum; please call x17 for details.
Programs that Educate,
Engage, and Inspire

Ship to Shore

How do boats float? Find out! Learn about buoyancy
and boat design with your own clay boat and test
how much cargo it can carry.

Seaweed, Slime, and Squish

Explore the science of ocean slime. Touch different
kinds of seaweed, create your own batch of goo, and
test it for squish, bounce, and stretch. Or create and
taste a sushi treat with seaweed!

Water, Water Everywhere

Have fun with water experiments. Learn about surface
tension and decorate your own reusable water
bottle to take home, or create watercolor art.

A Sailor’s Day

Ahoy! Learn about life aboard. Choose from touching
artifacts, scrimshaw, knotting bracelets, and mixing a
sailor’s recipe for hardtack biscuits to bake at home.

Crystal Clear

Learn about the minerals we find in our ocean. Find
out how marine animals are able to live in saltwater.
Look at crystals up close, design salty artwork, form
creations out of salt dough, or use minerals to create
your own toothpaste!

A la Oil

Explore the fun world of oil and discover how people
use oils. See whale oil up close, dissect an olive, and
test different seeds for their oil contents. Color your
own transparent oil artwork.

Bountiful Blubber

Explore how whales keep warm. See real blubber,
learn how people used it, try a blubber experiment,
and make your own pretend blubber batch.

Conchologists / Boneless Beauties

Who lives in our waters? Become a marine biologist
by observing aquatic invertebrates up close.
Learn about local mollusks and bivalves and design
your own sailor’s valentine out of shells, just
like the ones sailors brought home in the 1800s.

Marine Paleontologists

Unearth a frozen “fossil” and discover marine
surprises, including real shark teeth! Create a cool
necklace out of your findings and learn how to
use recycled paper for the beads.

Bugs to Blue Whales

Learn about skeletons and exoskeletons, fun style.
Meet a live bug, touch a real whale bone, and
etch your own message into your scrimshaw
keychain.

Sail With the Wind

Learn about how ships and sailboats use windpower.
Experiment with the shapes of sails,
see how seeds use the wind to float away,
and create your own wooden ship
model or Japanese windsock.
